Rene Magritte to Andre Breton, No Title, 27 juin 1947

June 27, 1946

Dear Friend,

I have been thinking about what you said about Magic.

As long as this traditional magic is able to resist or adamantly fight the behaviors and beliefs of "reasonable" people.

I can stand by your side and defend you.

That is also why I like the sign of rebellion which the "feminine principle" represents.

It would be easy for me, now, to love such an activity, because it looks like mine, which makes me forget about having to be efficient.

Today, I see our pleasure as a goal.

Whereas before, it was all about turning the world upside down.

Here, is how I understand utopia: it is not a dream that happens in the future, but utopia.

It is locating the golden age within the boundaries of our own lives.

I hope to see you soon.

Your friend,
Magritte

Ariana Papademetropoulos uses illusionary techniques in her art practice in an attempt to multiply the meaning of found images she appropriates for her paintings. The manipulation of these unique, vintage ephemera from magazines, postcards and books causes their palette to morph and draws out new  psychological undercurrents. Her reworking transforms the original images into something that registers as contemporary and timeless.

She received her BFA at CalArts in 2012 and also studied at the Universität der Künste in Berlin. Her work has been exhibited in Los Angeles, New York City, New Orleans, Mexico City, and Berlin. Her work is in private collections across Paris, Berlin, Buenos Aires, Venezuela, and all major U.S. cities. Papademetropoulos lives and works in Los Angeles.
