Marc Hundley: California

March 6 – June 30, 2015

Look Up is ecstatic to host its first artist, Marc Hundley, coming from New York. He will present a new series of works titled, “California” inspired by his wanderlust from time spent on the coast as well as by songs and books about by the neighboring areas.

Each work depicts the shadowy still lifes in which the artist holds a deeply personal relationship. The surfaces are carefully conceived reflections on his identity and memories of people, places and things. His favorite artists and musicians appear as words or images in the works, but all are anchored to the artist himself as the central core. The lyrics he isolates from songs become concrete poetry. In them, a complex arena unfolds with each subtlety between exterior life and total interior, stillness and reverie. Life is framed by the clutter of the banal and the immediate. By contrast, Hundley’s works bear no evidence of productivity, but disrupt into and of material reality. They demand intimacy and physical proximity. They are small in scale, portable and sweet. In the in between spaces of his images and texts is where his autobiographical environments transform into objects.

Hundley works in a modernist and minimalist style communicating an escapist tendency. Although he locates himself strongly within the context of his own works, the viewer can only access them through one’s imagination. The interface becomes like the lens of a camera capturing a reality but filtered through a distancing shield. “California” does not reflect contemporary society and its given tastes but is an allusive threshold to be crossed from afar.

Marc Hundley has shown at Team Gallery, White Columns, and Printed Matter, Inc., New York, Cherry and Martin, Los Angeles, Frieze Art Fair, London. His works have been reviewed in Artforum, New York Magazine, and New York Time Style Magazine. His works are collected by the Whitney Museum of American Art.
